Congressman Neal Smith and senior shareholder Tara Hall were honored in the Drake University School of Law’s “150 in 150” list as individuals who have best demonstrated the values of Drake Law and helped shape the school into what it is today. In celebration of the sesquicentennial anniversary, the law school invited alumni and friends of the school to nominate alumni, faculty, students, and friends for inclusion in the list.
Neal Smith is Of Counsel with the firm. He graduated from Drake Law School in 1950 after serving as Major in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1959 where he served until 1995. Congressman Smith joined Davis Brown in 1995 to practice law. His congressional influence touched the largest projects in central Iowa including the dams at Lakes Red Rock, Saylorville and Rathbun. Congressman Smith’s contributions to the Iowa community are recognized in the spaces bearing the his name including his Congressional Archives at the law library at Drake University Law School, the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge, the Neal and Bea Smith Legal Clinic, also at Drake, and the Neal Smith Federal Building in downtown Des Moines.
Tara graduated from Drake Law in 2005 with high honors. During her time at Drake, Tara served as the Executive Editor of the Drake Law Review. Tara is a senior shareholder and member of the litigation division with a general practice including, but not limited to, business litigation, commercial litigation, employment and labor relations, litigation and appeals, and real estate litigation. She is an Assistant Editor of the Iowa Employment Law Letter. Tara graduated from the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute in 2015 and is involved in community activities including Employee & Family Resources of Iowa and Beacon of Life and she has also served on the Drake Law School Board of Counselors.
