Three Davis Brown Attorneys Advocate for Central Iowa on Partnership's DM/DC Trip - May 18, 2017

For the 38th year, the Greater Des Moines Partnership hosted a fly-in to Washington D.C. for members of the Central Iowa community to advocate before our members of congress, regulators, and other governmental officials.

This year, Davis Brown sent three attorneys on the trip: Lori Chesser, Chair of the Immigration Department, Tim Coonan, Special Counsel in the Government Relations Department, and Mike Kulik, attorney in the Telecommunications Department.  Mike, Tim, and Lori are all involved in Greater Des Moines Partnership programs, leading Partnership committees and advocacy work.

Mike Kulik serves on the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) board and views this trip as an opportunity to showcase the work MPO is doing in Central Iowa and explain the need for support from Congress.

All three also enjoy the trip for the opportunity to hear more about how other businesses in the area are doing. “Davis Brown has supported entrepreneurs and growing businesses in central Iowa for over 85 years. This trip allows me to strengthen connections and to hear about issues communities and businesses are facing,” states Mike Kulik.

Lori Chesser explains, “The trip is not only a great chance to connect with Central Iowa business leaders, but also to talk directly with Congressional staff.  Having those face-to-face conversations is the best way to bring our concerns and needs before our members of Congress and to help them understand what we are facing on the ground.”

As she has done in the past, Lori led a workshop on immigration for the attendees. Immigration reform is a key part of the Partnership’s Federal Policy Agenda as the Partnership works to strengthen Central Iowa’s workforce and the region’s ability to fill jobs of the future. Lori continued the conversation with Michael Libbie, host of “The Insight on Business the News Hour with Michael Libbie” radio show on AM-940.

Tim Coonan reflects, “For Davis Brown and our clients, it’s vital that we are in the room to collaborate with so many stakeholders and advocate a coherent agenda to policymakers. This D.C. trip presented such a unique opportunity to learn from, but also to inform.”
