Jodie McDougal, attorney and Chair of the Construction Law Department, recently presented a legislative update to two professional organizations in Iowa.
On Wednesday, May 17, Jodie presented to the Remodelers Council, an HBA member group of remodeling contractors, specialty trade contractors and building material suppliers. The 2017 Iowa legislative session included some changes to Iowa law impacting residential home builders and remodelers, most notably, a change to the mechanic’s lien law, now requiring all contractors to file pre-lien notices and a change to Iowa’s statute of repose laws. In her presentation, Jodie explained the changes and detailed how the contractors and suppliers in attendance should change their practices in order to comply.
On Wednesday, May 25, Jodie presented to builder-developers in the HBA of Greater Des Moines in a workshop, “Risk Management for Builders and Developers,” with insurance agent Larry Heisler of Reynolds & Reynolds. Jodie’s portion of the presentation focused on builders’ and general contractors’ risk management for their subcontractors with a focus on appropriate insurance, risk allocation, loss prevention, and best practices.
