Iowa Immigration Law Blog: Republican Immigration Principles Announced - January 31, 2014

Washington Republicans have acknowledged the need for immigration reform. Vague as they are, the Republican reform principles announced yesterday after their annual retreat can be seen here.

Reading through the political-speak, the biggest news is their ascent to legalization for “DREAMers” – the children who do not have legal status through no fault of their own – and to a broader legalization for others here without legal status.

Being from an agricultural state, it is a relief to see the need for farm workers acknowledged as well. The nod to the positive economic impact of immigration is also appreciated.

In the end, the “piecemeal” approach may win the day. The Senate bill is sweeping in its scope, but upon close reading is alarming in its particulars. Having a debate on each aspect of this large policy challenge may be the best way to untangle fact from fiction and truth from myth.

Coming on the heels of strong support for immigration reform in President Obama’s State of the Union speech, we may have reason to hope that something will happen sooner rather than later. Stay tuned.
