The award was established to recognize entrepreneurs and honor the Iowa Congressman and Davis Brown Of Counsel attorney for his involvement in establishing the Small Business Development Center in Iowa. The awards were presented at a ceremony at the State Capitol Building on February 3, 2010.

The Davis Brown Law Firm announced the winner of their annual holiday greeting card contest and donated $1,000 to VSA of Iowa. Dick Grodt, a Cedar Rapids artist, designed the original artwork. In a reception at the firm, Steph Jessen, Executive Director of VSA Iowa was presented a framed edition of the card and $1,000 was donated to VSA of Iowa.

For many years, Davis Brown Law Firm attorneys and staff have been active with the organization.

Davis Brown Tower businesses "Filled The Tower" and donated over 1700 items of food, diapers, paper products and other non-perishables, and $1,338 to the Food Bank of Iowa on Thursday, December 3. The Davis Brown Law Firm, First National Bank of Iowa, LightEdge Solutions, Inc., Josephs Jewelers, and Orchestrate Management employees gave generously to help support the community through the holiday season.

"It was an outstanding drive during a year when charitable giving is down and the need is up. The results say a lot about the businesses and people at the Davis Brown Tower," said Davis Brown co-chair Bill Boatwright.

The street will close and the party will start at 11am on Wednesday, September 16 for the second annual Destination 10th Street block party. Vendors including Smoky D’s BBQ, Django, Raccoon River Brewery, Centro, and Gateway Market will serve mouth-watering $4 lunches to the public and Des Moines funk/jazz/blues band, One Nite Stand, will rock the street.

“Over 2,500 people came out from downtown businesses to enjoy the fabulous food and entertainment with friends and coworkers last year,” said Chris Diebel, Marketing Director, Orchestrate Management and Hospitality.

The proceeds from the day will benefit the Western Gateway Cultural Entertainment District and the Des Moines Music Coalition.

Davis Brown Law Firm attorney Sharon Malheiro and Lambda Legal Senior Staff attorney Camilla Taylor will be honored at the 2009 Matthew Shepard Scholarship Awards Dinner on June 5, 2009. Sharon Malheiro was co-counsel in defending Judge Jeffrey Neary in the Alons v. Iowa District Court for Woodbury County civil union dissolution case, an expert witness in Varnum v. Brien marriage equality case, and was instrumental in encouraging Lambda Legal to successfully lead both cases, which resulted in victorious Iowa Supreme Court decisions. Taylor led Lambda Legal’s successful effort in litigating Varnum v. Brien in District Court and before the Iowa Supreme Court.
