Professional Personnel Committee
The Professional Personnel Committee recruits and hires new summer associates, associates, and lateral hires. The committee is elected by the board of directors and is comprised of three shareholders, one associate, and the professional services administrator.
The committee currently includes attorneys: Susan Freed, Tara Hall (chair), Sarah Franklin, Sarah Crane, Maggie Hanson, and professional services administrator Barb Hardy.
Susan is a senior shareholder in the business division and Vice-President of the Board of Directors. Her practice is mainly in the areas of health law and employee benefits. She advises a wide variety of health care providers with respect to transactional, reimbursement, and regulatory issues. Susan also counsels clients on various health law issues including health care reform, fraud and abuse, confidentiality, and data security among others. She advises employers on welfare benefit issues including the ACA, ERISA, COBRA, and HIPAA and drafts and reviews a variety of plan documents and summary plan descriptions and also assists employers with implementing the Affordable Care Act and other regulatory changes.
Tara chairs the committee and is a shareholder and member of the Litigation Division. She maintains a general litigation practice including but not limited to business and commercial litigation, employment and labor relations, and litigation and appeals. Tara recently graduated from the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute.
Sarah Franklin is a senior shareholder in the litigation division. Her practice includes insurance defense, real estate litigation, employment litigation, fiduciary litigation, and business litigation. She represents clients in administrative hearings, district court hearings and jury trials, as well as appellate proceedings. Her clients include insurance companies, banks, financial institutions, commercial property owners, individual property owners, product designers and manufacturers, and employers.
Sarah Crane is a shareholder and member of the Litigation Division. She maintains a general litigation practice, including business litigation, commercial litigation, appellate practice, health law, antitrust law, insurance defense, and employment law. Sarah has significant experience in Iowa's District and Appellate Courts and in Federal Court, including the first case to be assigned to Iowa's newly constructed Business Court.
Maggie is an associate member of the litigation division. Her practice focuses on employment law, business litigation, commercial litigation, insurance defense, construction litigation, and products liability. She represents clients in state and federal court and has experience resolving matters in mediation, arbitration, and administrative forums. Maggie regularly presents to groups of employers on topics of hiring, termination, discrimination, harassment, unemployment practices and drug/alcohol testing.
