Joel M. Aschbrenner

Joel’s practice in the Business Division includes work in real estate, construction, land use, telecommunications, renewable energy, and nonprofits.

Joel joined Davis Brown in August 2020. He was previously a Summer Associate with the firm in 2018 and 2019.


Joel graduated from Drake University Law School with highest honors where he was named Outstanding Drake Law Student by the Iowa State Bar Association and was selected as a member of the Order of Coif. He interned for Iowa Supreme Court Justice Christopher McDonald and served as a junior staff member of the Drake Law Review as well as a member of the Moot Court Board.

Joel received his bachelor’s degree in journalism and business from Kansas State University, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Kansas State Collegian. Prior to starting law school, he worked as a journalist for the Des Moines Register where he was named a 2017 Outstanding Young Iowa Journalist by the Iowa Newspaper Association.


Joel is a member of the Des Moines Water Works Board of Trustees. He served on the Des Moines Historic Preservation Commission from 2017-2020.
