Davis Brown Shareholder Sharon K. Malheiro will be awarded the Power of One Award from the Philanthrofund Foundation (PFund) on Thursday, September 12 in Minneapolis. She is the 20th Power of One Award recipient, and the second from Iowa. The Power of One Award is designed to recognize individuals who work to improve the quality of life for the LGBT community through efforts such as volunteerism, activism and/or leadership.
On April 3, 2009, a unanimous Iowa Supreme Court decision in Varnum vs. Brien made Iowa the third U.S. state to legalize same-sex marriage. As the Board Chair of the statewide organization One Iowa, an organization seeking full equality for a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Iowa, Sharon helped launch a simultaneous grassroots campaign to win the hearts and minds of Iowans. She not only served as an expert witness for the landmark case, but was also instrumental in reaching the win. More recently, Sharon acted as co-counsel in Gartner v. Iowa Department of Public Health securing the rights of same-sex parents to have both names listed on their child’s birth certificate.
For more than 20 years, Sharon has practiced at the Davis Brown Law Firm in Des Moines, Iowa. In addition to her tireless work on behalf of civil rights for all Iowans, she also represents clients in matters related to employment law, media and communications and open records law. She is the past president of the firm’s Board of Directors and is one of the cooperating attorneys for Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.
Sharon is proudly married to her partner, Sue, of 24 years and resides in Des Moines.
