The 24th Annual Legal and Legislative Conference hosted by the Central Iowa Society for Human Resource Management was held February 25, 2016 and was well-attended by human resource professionals from the central Iowa region. Among the speakers at the day-long conference were two Davis Brown employment law attorneys, Kelsey Crosse, an associate in the Litigation and Employment departments, and Jo Ellen Whitney, a senior shareholder and Chair of the firm’s Employment Law department.
Kelsey’s presentation, Social Media in the Workplace, detailed issues involved with social media throughout the entire employment relationship including when employers use social media to recruit and screen applicants, when employees use social media to complain about their work conditions and engage in other online conduct that hinders their employer’s reputation, and how the EEOC and the NLRB interpret an employer’s response to various social media issues.
Jo Ellen presented on two different topics at the conference, “What’s Top Secret and What’s Just Secret? HIPAA, Employee Health and Work Comp,” and the hot button topic of marijuana and workplace drug testing.
Kelsey and Jo Ellen will also present at the upcoming Iowa Employment Conference on April 20th and 21st. Over 800 HR professionals have registered to attend. Kelsey will be speaking on daily leave issues that affect employers and employees such as the FLSA and weather delays, personal leave, sick leave, military leave, and permissible and impermissible deductions from pay. Jo Ellen’s presentation, Employee Surveillance - Old School Issues in a Digital Age will analyze various laws that apply to different forms of monitoring and surveillance.
