Elizabeth Van Arkel leads Immigration Program for Polk County Women Attorneys - December 13, 2016

On Monday, December 12, Elizabeth Van Arkel, an associate member of the Immigration Department, led a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program for the Polk County Women Attorneys (PCWA) organization.

In her presentation, Liz reviewed the differences between immigrant and non-immigrant statuses, common immigration programs and visas, and some common issues encountered by attorneys working with immigrants and non-immigrants. She also covered the details of how an attorney’s work could jeopardize a client’s immigration status and what issues attorneys should be aware of when representing immigrant clients.

In addition to Liz’s presentation, the PCWA program also featured presentations on the Affordable Care Act, another on Iowa’s Managed Care Organizations, and Judge Bremer and Emily Chafa presented on Implicit Bias in the legal system.

Polk County Women Attorneys was organized in 1986 to promote the professional growth of women in the law through educational programs, job placement programs, and other activities that enhance the stature of women in the law.  This professional association serves its members and the community by promoting awareness and acceptance of women in the legal profession and by seeking to formulate laws that are conducive to women’s welfare.
