The Central Iowa Society for Human Resources Management hosted its 25th Annual Legal and Legislative Conference on Friday, February 24, at the Prairie Meadows Events Center. The conference offers HR professionals, as well as those in related finance departments, an opportunity to hear from attorneys, governmental officials, and industry experts on new laws and legislation related to the field.
Jo Ellen Whitney, chair of the Davis Brown Employment Law and Labor Relations Department, led two breakout sessions during the day on the topics of social media and drug testing.
Jo Ellen and the other Davis Brown attorneys receive regular questions from clients about employees’ use of social media at work, a particular hazard for those in the health industry, what they can do to curb usage, and appropriate disciplinary action. Jo Ellen frequently presents on this topic to employers and industry groups.
Her second presentation on drug testing is of particular interest this year as the legislators at the Iowa Statehouse have taken up a bill to expand the legally allowable testing of applicants and employees.
