Maggie Hanson Selected for Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute Community Leadership Program - August 23, 2017

Maggie Hanson, an associate attorney in the litigation division, has been chosen as a member of the 2018 class of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute’s flagship program, the Community Leadership Program.

Maggie’s practice is primarily in employment law and business litigation.  She helps small and large employers by providing legal counsel regarding best employment practices. She helps companies comply with regulations and avoid litigation so business leaders can focus on growing their businesses.

Maggie has excelled as a leader within the legal community, currently serving on the Iowa State Bar Association’s Board of Governors as a district representative.  As a passionate advocate for democracy, equality, and change, Maggie worked with other attorneys in the Young Lawyers Division of the Iowa State Bar Association to form the diversity committee dedicated to increasing the diversity of young lawyers in Iowa.

She also devotes a significant amount of time to pro bono legal work.  She assisted a client through the federal Clemency Project and was elated in 2016 to receive a phone call from the White House Office of the Pardon Attorney informing her that President Obama had granted her petition. Maggie’s client returned to his family and his community in March 2017 after 13 years of incarceration for a nonviolent drug offense that under today’s sentencing policies and guidelines would have a sentence of six years.

Maggie is excited to participate in the Community Leadership Program, “I have always invested a great deal of my time in service and volunteering, and the Community Leadership Program provides an opportunity for dedicated professionals to unite under a common umbrella of public service and community involvement.”
