Lori Chesser Featured Guest on KCCI's Close Up Program - February 9, 2018

Lori Chesser, Immigration department chair, was a featured guest on KCCI's Close Up program on Sunday, January 28. Host Stacey Horst interviewed Lori about the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The program was started by President Obama in 2012, and in September 2017, President Trump announced he was eliminating the program effective March 2018.

Lori offered an overview of the DACA program, the eligibility qualifications, and who the recipients are. She also explained what elimination of the program would mean for recipients and offered a brief explanation of why DACA recipients often have no other legal immigration option, even as parents of U.S. citizen children, or married to a U.S. citizen.

Stacey and Lori also discussed the various policy proposals currently under discussion at the federal level to address immigration issues, including DACA.

Following Lori's interview, Stacey spoke with a DACA recipient, Maria Gonzalez, and Chief Michael Tupper of the Marshalltown Police about what DACA has meant for that community.
