The Iowa State Bar Association (ISBA) published a letter to the editor authored by Margaret Van Houten, attorney in the Trusts and Estates department and active leader in the legal profession, in the May issue of Iowa Lawyer. Margaret wrote the letter in response to President Steve Eckley’s note about gender bias and harassment in the April issue. She highlighted the status of women in the bar and what the ISBA can do to combat issues of harassment, discrimination, and bias against women in the profession.
“In the history of the ISBA, and in the almost 40 years I have been an attorney, there have been only three women who have served as president of our organization…ISBA needs more women on the Board of Governors so that nominating a woman as the vice president is no longer an unusual surprise…I encourage any woman who is interested in a leadership position on the Board of Governors, or as chair of a section or committee, to let your interested be known and to run… We must rebuke any perception that women, for whatever reasons, are not interested in these influential and meaningful positions.”
Margaret’s complete letter can be read on page 25 of the Iowa Lawyer.
