On Thursday, September 20, employment attorney Kelsey Crosse and health law attorney Craig Sieverding presented at the National Business Institute’s HR Bootcamp in West Des Moines.
Kelsey presented, “Social Media: Balancing Employer Need and Employee Rights,” and Craig presented, “HIPAA Best Practices for HR: Ensuring Confidentiality of Medical Information” to the assembled audience of public and private employers and HR professionals from across Iowa.
Kelsey’s presentation focused on how to draft and enforce company policies that relate to social media. The interactive session also worked through real-life case examples to clarify when employers can and should act and when it may be problematic to do so (i.e. risk of a lawsuit).
Craig’s presentation, “HIPAA Best Practices for HR: Ensuring Confidentiality of Medical Information” was designed to help HR leaders navigate the often-murky waters of privacy and security as it relates to medical information of employees. Human resources professionals often come into contact with such information volunteered by employees or through benefit administration. Craig shared details of where HIPAA applies (and where it doesn’t) and how HR professionals should treat information that might contain medical details.
