Davis Brown hosted five visiting Kazakhstani judges and attorneys on Monday, October 22. Elizabeth Van Arkel, Iowa International Center board member, gathered her colleagues, Deb Tharnish, Jason Ross, Joe Happe, Holly Logan, Sydney Gangestad and Katelynn McCollough, to discuss the judicial system, mentoring, alternative dispute resolution, criminal practice, and litigation with the Kazakhstanis.
During their time in Des Moines, they also visited Drake University Law School, Polk County Jail, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, District Court for District 5C, and the Iowa Supreme Court, among others.
The visitors are in the United States on a special program, Judicial Rule of Law, sponsored by the U.S. Congress “Open World” program. The Iowa International Center is a partner host, coordinating the local visit of these delegates. During their time in Des Moines, delegates explore U.S. approaches to court proceedings, the jury-trial process, the adversarial system, plea-bargaining, alternative dispute resolution, law enforcement and corrections practices, and the legislative process.
Davis Brown has a long history of working with the Iowa International Center, Lori Chesser and Jason Ross have also served on the board, and is honored to host visiting foreign dignitaries for special events and working meetings.
