Lori Chesser Guest Faculty at University of Texas Conference on Immigration and Nationality Law - December 10, 2018

The University of Texas at Austin School of Law recently hosted its 42nd annual Conference on Immigration and Nationality Law for immigration lawyers across the United States in Austin, Texas.

Conference organizers invited Lori Chesser, Davis Brown immigration department chair, to participate in two CLE workshops, “Minesweeping: Issues in Adjustment of Status,” and “Hot Topics and Emerging Issues in ICE Audits and USCIS/FDNS Investigations.”

With co-presenters, Amelia Ruiz Fischer and Richard Fischer, attorneys at Fischer & Fischer in Nacogdoches, TX, Lori’s adjustment of status session focused on the recent changes in USCIS procedures and focus, especially the expanded application forms and interview for employment-based applicants.  The panel was aimed at helping practitioners spot issues early in the process so that they could address them with clients before it is too late.

Lori’s second presentation, “Hot Topics and Emerging Issues in ICE Audits and USCIS/FDNS Investigations,” with Richard Gump, Jr. of Dallas, discussed with practitioners the increased threat of I-9 audits and the resulting fines and even criminal charges that can result. They also offered advice for practitioners to prepare their clients for visits from enforcement agencies and defend them during audits.

Lori was one of only two attorneys from outside the state of Texas serving as conference faculty.
