Sharon Malheiro, attorney in the Labor & Employment department and vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in Iowa was recently quoted by Courtney Crowder and Tony Leys in their article for the Des Moines Register, “‘Kicked in the face’: Transgender Iowans in pain after amendment bans public funds for transition care.”
The article covers the decision the Iowa Legislature made in its final days to include an amendment to the health budget bill allowing any state agency to refuse to cover any transition-related surgeries. Courtney and Tony interviewed a number of transgender Iowans about the impact the amendment will have on them. They also spoke with Sharon for her take on the legislature’s decision to include the amendment and the legal standing of the amendment.
Following the Des Moines Register’s publication, LGBTQ Nation reporter Alex Bollinger picked up the story publishing, “Iowa may soon stop covering transgender care through Medicaid.”
