Breanna Young, attorney in the Wills, Trusts, and Probate department, recently presented to the Board of Directors of Iowa Legal Aid on legal issues affecting transgender Iowans. Breanna was joined by Max Mowitz of One Iowa, the state’s leading organization advancing, empowering, and improving the lives of LGBTQ Iowans.
In their presentation, Breanna and Max shared details of how Iowa law impacts transgender Iowans including the rules for changing one’s name and gender marker on official documents, the Iowa Civil Rights Act and public accommodations, and the recent court cases involving transgender Iowans and Medicaid coverage. They also included some information about how Federal law and Iowa law intersect.
Breanna said, “Iowa Legal Aid attorneys work to protect the fundamental rights of many of Iowa’s most vulnerable residents. Transgender and gender-nonconforming Iowans face unique legal issues, and the Board members had some excellent questions about how to best help these underserved populations.”
