JoEllen Whitney, Chair of the Employment and Labor Law Department, recently
spoke at the “Mental Health in the Workplace” Iowa Employment Conference at The
Meadows Events Center.
Jo Ellen presented, “Conversations No One Likes to Have -
Addressing Mental Health Accommodations in the Workplace.” The discussion
covered how employers can begin to address workplace
accommodations related to their employees' mental health needs. These are
conversations that can be difficult for both employer and employee while trying
to navigate compassion, concern, and potential legal issues.
Attendees gained an
understanding of which employers are covered by the ADA/ADAAA/FMLA, when their
employees are covered, and how the regulations interact. They also learned of
reasonable accommodations, tips on how to address performance issues that might
be caused by poor mental health, and how to have a discussion regarding these
