On December 18, 2019, acting Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court David Wiggins appointed Lori Chesser and Elizabeth Van Arkel to two Court Commissions.
Immigration Department Chair Lori Chesser will serve on the Client Security Commission (CSC) until 2022 to fill an unexpired term. The CSC oversees a fund that provides indemnification for losses caused to the public by the dishonest conduct of Iowa attorneys and supports the administration of the lawyer disciplinary system. Lori will serve on the commission with four other Iowa lawyers and two non-lawyer Iowans.
Elizabeth Van Arkel, immigration attorney, was appointed to the Commission on Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL). She will complete the remainder of a term that expires in June 2020. The UPL Commission, which is comprised of seven lawyer members and two non-lawyer members, receives complaints and investigates the alleged unauthorized practice of law in Iowa.
