Davis Brown Participates in Virtual Iowa Employment Conference - April 20, 2020

Following the declared public health emergency, the Iowa Employment Conference moved its annual two-day spring conference to a virtual platform allowing human resources professionals from around the state to still take advantage of the opportunity for continuing education and networking.


Numerous Davis Brown attorneys presented virtually on April 8 and 9.


Kelsey Crosse and Nils Johnson presented Lessons Learned from Multi-Million Dollar Litigation covering tips on how to prevent expensive lawsuits and jury verdicts, and lessons learned from the trenches of multi-million-dollar litigation through trial. During the presentation, they answered questions about all types of employment lawsuits and provided advice about strategic documentation – what to document and why (and what to discuss over the phone or in person instead!) with the understanding that some documents may turn into exhibits at trial.


Lori Chesser presented Preparing your Business for an I-9 Audit reviewing how businesses can make sure they are taking the right steps now to correctly complete I-9s, understanding the risks of the electronic I-9, and prepare plans for responding to a visit from ICE or other law enforcement. With many companies working remotely during this pandemic, Lori also reviewed how HR can comply with the regulations without seeing the employee or their documents within the first days of hire.


Michele Brott and Maggie Hanson reviewed common questions and answers about wage and hour matters in their presentation, Time is Money. Through the use of instructive case studies, Michele and Maggie reviewed issues of classification, overtime, and wage deduction.


Estate planning attorney Breanna Young joined with litigation attorney Katelynn McCollough to present What to do When an Employee Dies or Is Injured. Together, Breanna and Katelynn explored the aftermath of serious on-the-job injuries and workplace deaths. They reviewed how to navigate the needs of a company during the difficult time including required reporting, insurance matters, internal and external communications, and pay and benefits issues.
