Davis Brown Government Relations Report

2019 Legislative Report - Week Eleven - March 29, 2019

Week 11 brought a balanced amount of floor and committee work, with a pause on Wednesday for two special recognitions. The legislature celebrated Pioneer Lawmakers, those lawmakers and honorary individuals who have served the legislature 20+ years, and Memorial Lawmakers, recognizing former legislators who passed away over the last two years.

There are five weeks left until the scheduled last day of session and one week left until the second funnel deadline.  Policy bills continue to be acted upon at the committee level and on the House and Senate floors. We are also now seeing budget bills begin to make their way through the appropriations committee process.  Aside from Appropriations and Ways and Means bills, policy bills must make it through one chamber and out of committee in the other chamber by the end of next week or they are considered “dead” until next year.

Senator Giddens Sworn In

At the beginning of the week, Senator Giddens was sworn in after his Special Election win in Senate District 30 last week.  The Senate is now back to 32-18.  Senator Giddens has been assigned the committee seats that Senator Danielson held prior to his resignation: Transportation, Education, State Government, Veterans Affairs, and Ways and Means.
