Senior Shareholder and former Board President, Sharon Malheiro, will receive the Richard S. Arnold Award for Distinguished Service from the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit at a ceremony in May. The award's namesake, Judge Arnold, is well known for his protection and advocacy of civil and human rights throughout his legal career.
Sharon’s nomination included notes about her civil and human rights work over the course of her career spanning more than 25 years.
Sharon’s work can be seen in many of the major cases affecting the civil rights of Iowans including Varnum v. Brien declaring the Iowa Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, Planned Parenthood v. Iowa Board of Medicine establishing a fundamental right to abortion through telemedicine allowing access to such medical services for Iowa citizens in rural communities. Sharon has consistently fought for those lacking a voice in the judicial system, she represented retired police officer and veteran whose service dog was taken away by the city for violation of a breed specific ban, resulting in the first federal court decision that found such bans violate disability laws.
