In 2016, a new tradition began at Willard Elementary School. Fifth graders complete a yearlong assignment to prepare and paint a mural on a public building in their neighborhood. In addition to the artistic aspect of the painting, the students engage math, public speaking, and collaborative teamwork for the project.
This year, a new group of students continued the tradition. The results of the 2017 project can be seen on East 30th Street in Des Moines. Fifth grader Savannah Peterson designed a mural featuring the Iowa State capital in all four seasons. On Saturday, May 13, a team of students, teachers and parents came together to paint Savannah’s drawing as a mural on the brick wall of the S&H Electric.
Davis Brown is a founding sponsor of the project, providing funding for the student painting supplies.
