Spencer Willems recently joined the Davis Brown Law Firm as an associate litigation attorney. Spencer’s practice focuses primarily on general litigation, commercial litigation, and employment and labor law.
Prior to joining Davis Brown, Spencer practiced litigation at Lane & Waterman in Davenport. During law school, he interned in the Story County Attorney’s Office as well as serving as a Judicial Extern for former Chief Justice Mark Cady of the Iowa Supreme Court.
Spencer graduated with highest honors from Drake University Law School in 2019 and received his bachelor’s degree in journalism in 2009 from the University of Missouri.
Prior to his law career, Spencer was an award-winning journalist. He first worked at the Cedar Rapids Gazette/KCRG TV9. He then spent several years as a crime reporter, then politics reporter, with the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he received numerous awards and honors for his reporting. He was named to the Washington Post’s “Best State Political Reporters” list in 2016 and the Arkansas Press Association awarded him first place in the 2014 Political Reporting category.
Spencer’s legal practice also includes work on First Amendment and public information law; he advises news organizations and public entities on questions and conflicts related to public information.
